Bleeding gums: causes and solutions

Bleeding gums are never “normal”: they are often the first sign of inflammation that should be treated early.

Common causes

  • Build-up of plaque and tartar (gingivitis)
  • Brushing too hard or not enough
  • Smoking, certain medicines, pregnancy

What can be done?

A scale and polish with personalised hygiene advice is often enough to stop the bleeding. Left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis. Regular check-ups with the dental hygienist are the best prevention.
